Public Garden Career Center - View Job
Posted: Friday, January 24, 2014
Now in its 61st year as a public garden, Kingwood Center in Mansfield, Ohio is looking for two gardeners. (One is to replace the legendary gardener Charles Applegate.) These positions report to the Head Gardener. Each is a skilled position individually managing designated gardens and working with other staff on various gardening projects. Work is often done independently and is usually self-directed. For people who love gardening this is a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in gratifying and creative work. The work is physical and is mostly outdoors in all sorts of weather including cold, wet and hot. Heavy lifting, repetitive and tiring labor, and regularly getting dirty are all part of the job. The person in this position interacts with the public through managing volunteers, speaking with visitors, and representing Kingwood Center. They may be expected to write and speak about Kingwood and gardening in public forums. The position also supports a wide range of Kingwood Center activities such as special events, and other public programs. But the preponderance of time spent in this position should be gardening, preparing to garden, telling people about gardening, and becoming a gardening expert.
A successful candidate should be an experienced and knowledgeable gardener, preferably with formal plant science education. This is a full-time, year round position with health insurance, 401-K, paid vacations & holidays, and other assorted benefits.
To apply: Send a resume and cover letter with salary history to Bill Collins, Head Gardener at email@example.com. Images of gardens you have developed are welcome.
