The New York Botanical Garden

The New York Botanical Garden, a National Historic Landmark and one of NYC’s premier cultural institutions, seeks a candidate to join their Horticulture Department as a Curator of the Native Plant Garden and Rock Garden.  The New York Botanical Garden is a museum of plants, an educational institution, and a scientific research organization.  It is the largest in any city in the United States spanning 250 acres of landscape, 50 curated display gardens, and array of programs, exhibitions, and activities.  The Garden also houses the most important botanical and horticultural library in the world. 

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • The Curator of the Native Plant Garden and Rock Garden is primarily responsible for the evaluation, development, plantings and facilitation of management of the Native Plant Garden and Rock Garden. The Curator will also provide additional work in other gardens and collections as necessary. Key duties include:
  • Evaluate and refine maintenance protocols and collections policies in assigned areas and make recommendations for planting plans for each.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with nurseries and orders approved plants for addition to landscape in assigned areas.
  • Coordinate, facilitate and provide selected oversight for work performed by landscape and related contractors in assigned areas.
  • Represent the gardens in media interviews, symposia, and tour offerings.
  • Prepare the articles as required for selected publications, profiles and printed material.
  • Work closely with the Associate Vice President of Outdoor Gardens and Senior Curator, Associate Vice President of Arboretum and Grounds, Curator of Woody Plants, and the Assistant Manager of Arboretum and Grounds to coordinate work in assigned areas.
  • Work closely with Plant Health Care Manager to monitor all aspects of plant health care in assigned areas.
  • Work closely with the Plant Records Manager and staff to indentify, document and label collections in assigned areas.
  • Work closely with the School of Professional Horticulture staff to facilitate and coordinate SOPH student training and experience.
  • Work closely with all New York Botanical Garden divisions to facilitate, coordinate and implement programs, including special events, educational and interpretive programs and coordinating public information.


  • At least five years experience working with a broad spectrum of plants and garden management at a high level.
  • Substantial knowledge of Northeastern North American native plants and alpine plants, as well as some experience with seasonal design and plantings.
  • Minimum of a two-year technical degree in horticulture or closely related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Proficient computer skills with experience in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • New York State Pesticide Applicator’s Certification Category 3A or the ability to attain this certification within one year of employment.
