The City of Kennesaw, Georgia is seeking an experienced horticulturalist to fill the position of Lead Horticulturalist for the Smith-Gilbert Gardens. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Lead Horticulturalist is responsible for coordination of care and maintenance of the Garden’s 16 acres of outdoor plant collections, gardens and landscapes, review projects, scopes of work and budget as required and for developing, maintaining and selecting plants or plant collections that befit the mission of Smith-Gilbert Gardens. A primary responsibility is to set a vision for developing and implementing initiatives, action plans, procedures and schedules to support and improve the Garden and its outdoor plant collections, and to help create a culture of continuous improvement.
Knowledge of hands-on horticulture as related to woody, perennial, and annual plants is a must.
Candidates should also have a broad knowledge of ornamental plants; high level gardening skills, propagation or other research experience; and the desire to work in a positive, team-based environment. The successful candidate must be willing to share knowledge through teaching classes, working with volunteers and by promoting the Gardens through public presentations and writing.
