The University of Virginia seeks a dynamic, creative individual to join our education team and fill the position of part-time Environmental Educator for the State Arboretum of Virginia at Blandy Experimental Farm. The ideal candidate will possess the knowledge and skills to help expand our educational outreach through various web-based applications.
 
The Environmental Educator assists in program planning and coordination, and teaches science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field investigation programs for over 5,000 PreK-12 school children who visit Blandy annually. The employee in this position also helps plan, coordinate, and teach STEM professional development opportunities for teachers.
 
A bachelors degree or equivalent is required; a degree in a science, especially biology, natural sciences, horticulture, environmental science, etc., and/or an education related field is strongly preferred.
 
Experience working with youth as a staff member or volunteer in the classroom or nonformal education venues, such as museums and parks, is required. Experience with education program planning and development is desirable.
 
The successful Environmental Educator candidate will have a basic understanding of science principles related to the natural sciences and an understanding of the scientific process. The candidate must be able to manage classroom-sized groups of children while presenting programs. The candidate physically must be able to walk a mile or two over uneven terrain, work outside year-round, and lift items up to 40 pounds. The candidate should enjoy working with school children of all ages and with teachers.
 
This is a part-time University Staff position. The salary range is $22,804 - $27,750 for 30 hours/week. The typical schedule for this position is 6 hours/day, Monday-Friday. Occasional weekend and evening hours may be required, based on programs scheduled.
