Additional Information

Purpose of position: Develops and implements Family Garden education programming and interpretation for youth and families and other special audiences for the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Essential functions:

Develops and implements education program and work plan for all Family Garden programs and activities. Develops and implements education resources on www.wildflower.org as related to the Family Garden. Assists with education programming support for Family Garden and center-wide events including but not limited to Goblins in the Garden, Plant Sale, Luminations and Tree Talk and Winter Walk. Facilitates and manages school and youth group programs for the Family Garden. Provides interpretive support and develops interpretive materials for use in the Family Garden. Assists with grant writing and administration for Family Garden and other education programs as necessary. Supervises student interns and volunteers.


Marginal/Incidental functions:

Other duties as assigned. Position requires some evening and weekend work for mission related activities.


Required qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in environmental education, nature play education, or interpretation or related field with an emphasis or minor in botany or biology and three years experience coordinating or administering a program in a public garden, preserve, or nature center setting. OR Bachelor's degree in botany or biology or related field with an emphasis or minor in environmental education, nature play education or interpretation and three years experience coordinating or administering a program in a public garden, preserve, or nature center setting. Possess strong communication skills, excellent writing skills, and computer literacy with MS Office. Current first aid and CPR certification required. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with a Master's degree and experience in developing outdoor nature play education or environmental education programming for youth and families in a public garden setting. The successful candidate will be committed to the Wildflower Center's mission, be energetic, creative, highly organized, enthusiastic, and possess good judgment. Have demonstrated their ability to develop and present creative environmental education programs to small or large groups varying from preschool to adult and family. Will possess attention to detail. Have demonstrated their ability to develop interpretive materials like hands-on kits, discovery packs, etc. Be able to handle multiple events and activities cheerfully. Enjoy working with children and families. Be able to work closely and effectively with varied staff and supervise student interns and volunteers.

Working conditions:

May work in all weather conditions. May work in extreme temperatures. May work around standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Office environment and outdoor activities are included. Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items and work with the fingers. Moderate lifting, carrying, bending, pushing/pulling and walking required. Minimal overnight travel.
