Status: Non-exempt – Full time
This position will be responsible for providing support and labor in all gardens and natural areas throughout Minnetrista’s campus. Reporting to and working directly with the Horticulture Manager, the gardener will also focus on and provide a positive visitor and volunteer experience.
Must have at least 2 years work experience in the field of Horticulture or Natural Resources or the equivalent academic experience. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather. Must demonstrate a history of working independently and in a group setting. Must be able and willing to operate manual transmission vehicles and a wide range of horticultural equipment or be willing to receive training. This position requires the ability to learn quickly and retain information. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and the general public. This position requires the willingness to lead and work directly with diverse groups of staff and volunteers in a positive and professional manner. Dependability, ability to prioritize, and a good sense of urgency are necessary. A basic ability to use computers and Microsoft Office is necessary. GIS software knowledge is a plus. Working knowledge of plant identification is a plus. A valid driver’s license is required. o Lead Seasonal gardeners and volunteers to accomplish assigned tasks.
o Provide feedback to the Horticulture Manager on the success and challenges of assigned tasks, including team dynamics and individual seasonal gardener performance.
o Monitor and maintain gardens independently – prioritizing and managing work load
o Maintain pesticide training and apply chemicals to garden or natural areas as needed.
o Practice proper tool usage and use appropriate personal protective equipment and ensure that seasonal staff, volunteers, and interns are using proper safety techniques.
o Expand knowledge of horticulture, natural areas management and participate in “Plant of the Week” program.
o Participate in garden planning and design implementation. Create and lead horticulture programming such as garden tours, Get up and Grow articles, and garden talks.
o Be a primary volunteer contact. Work with, support and coach volunteers of all ages and backgrounds.
o Greet and interact with visitors on-site by answering questions in a positive and professional manner.
o Assist in the implementation of the institutional events.
o Keep the Minnetrista plant database updated and accurate.
o Create new, print replacements, or fix plant labels as needed.
o Within first year of employment, must receive Core and Category 3A or 6 Pesticide Training.
o Willingness to perform all other labor related duties as required.
Work setting is outdoors on a year-around basis. Indoors, a desk and computer is provided. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.The organization will need coverage by the horticulture department seven days a week based on assigned operating hours. You will be expected to work within this time frame. Since Minnetrista accommodates numerous public programs and events all staff are required to provide coverage as needed, day and night, seven days a week. Frequent mandatory work schedule changing, with limited notice, is to be expected.
