Horticulture Manager

U of MN Classification #9339 - Asst Dept Director: Reporting to the Director of Operations and Research.  University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum -  Chaska, MN 
The Horticulture Manager will be responsible for managing the horticulture programs at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and Horticultural Research Center including living plant collections, display gardens, model landscapes and ecological restorations.  Manage greenhouse and propagation areas and facilities required for new Center for Plant Conservation and North American Plant Collection Consortium projects.  Plan and manage development and restoration of the Lake Tamarack property to meet Arboretum goals and program needs.  This position is responsible for 7 day per week operations of the horticulture programs and for maintaining plantings to high quality standards and that follows the Arboretum's Plant Collection Policy, curatorial standards, and aesthetic expectations.  
Required Qualifications:  
  • BS in Horticultural Sciences or related field and 5 years relevant experience
  • Public garden experience including, curatorial experience; managing plant collections, special exhibitions, seasonal gardens and displays; plant conservation efforts; and garden events  
  • Supervisory or managerial experience with demonstrated performance and leadership of horticultural and nursery operations and programs in a diverse, bargaining unit setting.  
  • Experience in grant writing, donor relations, public speaking and adult education instruction
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as required
Preferred Qualifications:   
  • Graduate Degree in Horticultural Science or related field preferred
  • Familiarity with Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Grounds, Building
  • Visitor service skills including managing staff in a busy public environment, helping visitors with wayfinding and event logistics, public relations and public speaking and conducting tours.
