DIRECTOR OF HORTICULTURE AND CURATOR
THE ARBORETUM AT PENN STATE
The Arboretum at Penn State is a young and rapidly developing public garden within short walking distance of central campus at The Pennsylvania State University. Our initial construction in 2009 included a pavilion and office, 5 acres of gardens, and 25 additional acres of landscaping. A $3.3 million children’s garden will be completed this year, and detailed schematics and cost estimates are in place for a 33,000 sq. ft. education and visitors’ center, a 13,000 sq. ft. conservatory, a modern planetarium, and a greatly expanded pollinators’ garden. We are highlighted in university fundraising efforts, which have yielded nearly $20 million in private philanthropy to date. The Arboretum is run by a dedicated staff of six, exclusive of maintenance, and the director reports to a steering committee of six deans and vice-presidents and, informally, the university provost.
We seek to hire a Director of Horticulture and Curator. The principal responsibilities of the successful applicant will be to 1) continue the development of our collections policy and collections management system; 2) evaluate collections and initiate new plant acquisitions; 3) participate in the oversight of new garden planning and construction; 4) coordinate the care and maintenance of the Arboretum with the Office of Physical Plant; 5) coordinate our volunteer and summer internship programs; 6) work with faculty to facilitate research and education within the Arboretum; 7) provide guest lectures and public presentations as occasion demands; 8) manage special events such as the annual plant sale; and 9) manage the visitor experience as the principal public “face” of the Arboretum. The position requires a master’s degree in horticulture, botany, or related discipline, related work experience, and a strong knowledge of plant material. Public garden experience is especially desirable. Attention to detail and the ability to work within a team environment are vital requirements, as well as excellent communication skills. The deadline for applications is June 1 or until we successfully fill the position. This is a multi-year, fixed-term appointment with the expectation of renewal. Penn State is committed to affirmative action, equal opportunity and the diversity of its workforce. Apply to job 39376 at www.psu.jobs.
