The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is known as one of the top Gardens in the country and is recognized for excellence in horticultural displays; maintaining and advancing this public standing in the industry is integral to this position. This position helps ensure that the horticultural mission and goals are well integrated in all aspects of the Garden and that the guest experience is centered around horticulture and plants.
The Greenhouse Horticulturist position is responsible for overseeing the care of exotic plants at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. The collection is grown and supported by approximately twelve thousand square feet of production greenhouses and is most prominently displayed in the Orchid Conservatory. The Conservatory is one of the Garden’s primary attractions and was built to showcase the Garden’s extensive collection of orchids. The Greenhouse Horticulturist is responsible for the permanent and rotating displays of orchids and tropical plants in the conservatory. The Greenhouse Horticulturist is a horticulturist within the department and expected to perform all levels of landscape and grounds maintenance, actively participate in Garden programs, events and tours as well as local plant societies and shows.
Ø Directly responsible for the health, display quality and reliable performance of all plants grown and stored in greenhouses, including the orchid collection and tropical plant inventory.
Ø Manages greenhouse structures, systems and operations to ensure proper plant health care and hygiene.
Ø Operates an active IPM program that includes scouting and both conventional and progressive control methods.
Ø Responsible for the successful establishment and growth of vegetative and woody cuttings taken from the Garden to be propagated or perpetuated for various purposes.
Ø Responsible for building and managing an inventory or saleable plants to support the Garden Store.
Ø Participates in orchid propagation and procurement to build and improve the collection.
Ø Responsible for plant labeling and tracking in accordance with established records management standards.
Ø Manages permanent and rotating displays of tropical plants in the Conservatory, including large trees and palms.
Ø Assists with design and planning for Conservatory displays and all seasonal and temporary exhibits.
Ø Oversees the training, scheduling and management of volunteers for greenhouse and Conservatory support.
Ø Extensive knowledge of orchids and tropical plants. Horticulture Degree preferred.
Ø At least three years of relevant experience required. Five years relevant experience preferred.
Ø Ability to design and install plant-based displays.
Ø Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends is required.
Ø Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to produce a clean driving record.
