Horticulture Gardeners - Seasonal

 

The Holden Arboretum is recruiting people to perform hands-on work in our gardens and natural areas. We will begin staffing these positions for a period of five-(5) to seven-(7) months depending on the growing season and project needs.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to planting and maintaining a variety of woody and herbaceous plants, pruning, deadheading, weeding, apply mulch and soil amendments, transplanting, dividing perennials, watering, fertilizing, hauling brush, mowing, raking, pest control, installing and removing deer fencing and the use of deer repellent; and the use of herbicides to control invasive plants.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • Work in and around poison ivy and poison sumac, water, mud and brush.
  • Work around stinging insects.

 

Requirements of the position include:

  • Experienced gardeners preferred.
  • Experienced equipment operators for stick shift vehicles. (Cushman, tractor, pick up trucks, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience fine turf mowing and string line trimming preferred.
  • Use of hand pruners, loppers, hand saws and backpack sprayers.
  • Application of herbicides and deer repellent.
  • Able to work independently and within small work teams.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Operation and routine maintenance of power equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Self Motivated.

 

Essential Elements of the position with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Work outdoors where the ambient temperature spans 0 - 100 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Transport oneself by foot over a variety of terrain that may be wet, slippery, uneven, rocky
  • Stand, bend, kneel, climb, reach, pull, push, sit, grab, and lift and carry (up to 50 lbs.)
  • Operate a variety of machinery and equipment including chainsaws, chippers skidsteer, tractor, dump truck, utility vehicles, pruners, shears, weed eaters, sprayers, and push and riding mowers
  • Speak, write and understand English
  • Independent decision-making
  • Work independently as well as with others
