Friends of the High Line (FHL) is the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation’s non-profit partner working to ensure the park on the High Line is maintained as a great public place for all New Yorkers and visitors to enjoy. In addition to overseeing the maintenance, operations, and public programming for the High Line, FHL is currently working to raise the essential funding to help complete the High Line's construction and create an endowment for its future operations.
The High Line Horticulture Intern is an integral part of FHL’s Park Operations team. Under the general supervision of FHL’s Vice President of Horticulture & Park Operations and the Manager of Horticulture, the Horticulture Intern plays an important role in maintaining the High Line and plantings during the spring and summer seasons. Working interactively with a team of gardeners, custodians, maintenance technicians, and High Line administrators, the intern’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Care for diverse plantings of trees, shrubs, vines, perennials, grasses, and bulbs;
Hand water and monitor irrigation of plantings, especially during time of establishment and drought;
Perform seasonal landscape work including planting, pruning, clean-up, bulb planting, dividing and transplanting, and leaf removal;
Supervise volunteers (individuals and groups) and Youth Corps in horticulture tasks;
Scout for pests and disease;
General clean-up of garden beds and paths, clean-up litter;
Stage equipment, supplies, and materials for daily horticulture operations;
Participate in snow and ice removal as needed;
Maintain tools and equipment.
Experience in landscape maintenance;
Detail-oriented, with considerable attention to order and cleanliness throughout the park;
Willingness to work as part of a team or alone, in all weather conditions;
Ability to perform heavy physical labor (able to lift 40 pounds) on a daily basis;
Ability to use light power equipment and hand tools;
Willingness to interact with the park patrons and communicate the High Line’s horticultural goals;
Experience working with volunteers and youth preferred;
Able to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed;
Valid NY state driver’s license.
