Seasonal Gardener, Temporary
Friends of the High Line (FHL) is the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation’s non-profit partner working to ensure the park on the High Line is maintained as a great public place for all New Yorkers and visitors to enjoy. In addition to overseeing the maintenance, operations, and public programming for the High Line, FHL is currently working to raise the essential funding to help complete the High Line's construction and create an endowment for its future operations.
The Seasonal Gardener is an important part of FHL’s Park Operations team, under the general supervision of FHL’s Horticulture Staff. The Seasonal Gardener is a temporary position that will assist with the High Line’s annual Spring Cutback initiative, taking place approximately from the beginning of March through the middle of April 2013 (weather dependent). Working interactively with a team of gardeners and volunteers, the Seasonal Gardener’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Manually cut back perennials and grasses;
Perform seasonal landscape work including planting, pruning, clean-up, bulb planting, dividing and transplanting, leaf removal;
Supervise volunteers (individuals and groups) and Youth Corps in horticulture tasks;
General clean-up of garden beds and paths, clean-up litter;
Participate in snow and ice removal as needed;
Stage equipment, supplies, and materials for daily horticulture operations;
Participate in plant debris and trash removal procedures;
Maintain tools and equipment.
Experience in landscape maintenance;
Detail-oriented, with considerable attention to order and cleanliness throughout the park;
Willingness to work as part of a team or alone, in all weather conditions;
Ability to perform heavy physical labor (able to lift 40 pounds) on a daily basis;
Ability to use light power equipment and hand tools;
Experience working with volunteers and youth preferred;
Willingness to interact with the park patrons and communicate the High Line’s horticultural goals;
Able to work overtime, weekends, holidays as needed.
