Botanical Garden Aide
The New York Botanical Garden, a National Historic Landmark and one of NYC’s premier cultural institutions, seeks a candidate to join their Horticulture Department as a Botanical Garden Aide in their Glasshouses. The New York Botanical Garden is a museum of plants, an educational institution, and a scientific research organization. It is the largest in any city in the United States spanning 250 acres of landscape, 50 curated display gardens, and array of programs, exhibitions, and activities. The Garden also houses the most important botanical and horticultural library in the world.
Summary of Responsibilities:
The Botanical Garden Aide, under direct supervision, will work in the Glasshouses assisting the Foreman of Gardeners or members of the gardening staff in the planting and maintenance of the botanical collection. He/she performs as directed, mowing, pruning, potting, planting, spraying, watering, etc. of the plant collections and around the grounds as required. He/she performs general maintenance work such as unpacking of plants and materials, light moving, and etc. The Botanical Garden Aide operates machinery as called for in the performance of the above duties such as mowers, sprayers, pruners, etc. and performs general gardening duties requiring the use of hand tools such as shovels, shears, etc., and performs minor repairs requiring minimal skills to small equipment such as shears, sprinklers, etc.
· High School graduate or GED.
· A minimum of 6 months of experience in assisting with gardening or landscaping work, or some knowledge of gardening or landscaping.
· Valid driver’s license preferred.
· Flexibility to work different schedules including Saturdays and Sundays and overtime required.
Annual Salary: $29,672/yr. and excellent benefits!
