BRIDGE GARDENS INTERNSHIP
(sponsored by Peconic Land Trust)
BG is a 5-acre public garden in Bridgehampton, NY, owned and operated by Peconic Land Trust. Its mission is to serve as an outdoor classroom and demonstration garden, where visitors may learn about they can do at the individual level to practice responsible and sustainable gardening and landscape management. It has herb, vegetable and rose gardens, as well as displays of annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs.
The Bridge Gardens internship offers a hands-on work experience at a public garden to those aspiring to a career in horticulture and landscape design. Applicants should have previous gardening experience and have taken courses in horticulture, public gardening or landscape design. Applicants must be responsible, self-motivated and able to perform strenuous physical labor.
The intern will gain practical work experience in public garden and landscape maintenance and knowledge of environmentally responsible horticulture, integrated pest management and sustainable gardening. He/she will participate in educational programs held at the Gardens, interact with visitors and go on field trips with staff to local nurseries and other public gardens.
The intern will work directly with Bridge Gardens staff and participate in a wide range of horticultural activities. These include planting, transplanting, watering, weeding, mulching, pruning, fertilizing, pest control and routine landscape maintenance.
The intern must be willing to work in the rain and in hot, humid weather, be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., kneel, bend, stoop, reach and climb ladders. Ideally, he/she will know how to operate motorized garden equipment, like riding mowers, or be willing to learn.
