2013 SUMMER Internships
Winterthur’s Internship Program provides a diverse and exciting experience for students in the fields of arboriculture, garden and estate maintenance and natural lands management. All interns participate in classes on plant identification, irrigation, turf management, and plant records; attend lectures and field trips. Limited housing is available on Winterthur site.
Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library is the home of the former H.F. DuPont with 1000 acres of naturalistic gardens set amid the rolling hills of Delaware’s Brandywine Valley area. Appealing to a wide audience of tourists, culture seekers, and avid horticulturists, the Winterthur Garden is a historic and rare example of a “wild garden.”
Garden Historian – 1 position
The Garden Historian Intern will focus on organizing the historical documentation for the restoration of the Reflecting Pool, East Terrace and Glade. This intern will also photo document the current site conditions of those areas. The intern will prep all garden restoration files for archiving. This will include organizing and scanning documents and photographs and identifying missing information.
Minimum: 2+ years of experience in any combination of coursework, paid or unpaid experience in garden/landscape design, historical research; Preferred: 4 years of college with corsework in garden/landscape design and history and horticulture. Research skills in locating and deciphering key information, Strong organizational skills and attention to details, Ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing; good time management skills, ability to follow directions as well as good decision making skills; ability to work independently and complete projects on their own. basic plant nomenclature and garden design knowledge/ garden history knowledge; ability to climb stairs; Excellent computer skills required along with basic digital photography, Ability to read maps. Salary $9.50 per hour

Groundskeeping – 1 position
The Groundskeeping Intern will learn proper turfgrass management techniques through hands-on experience in the day to day management of the turf within the Winterthur Garden and Estate. They will gain experience in handling a range of mowers and turf situations. They will also assist with the maintenance of the historic naturalistic design of the garden by learning and practicing good safety and excellent horticultural techniques, e.g., fertilizing, planting, pruning, snow removal, leaf removal, mowing, spraying pesticides, mulching, weedeating and learn the cultural requirements and botanical nomenclature of the plants along with the design principles used in the Winterthur Garden.
Six months educational and/or field experience in the study of horticulture or a related field; ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing; ability to execute oral and written instructions; ability to lift 50 pounds; ability to safely operate horticultural hand tools and power equipment; sufficient hearing and sight to be aware of nearby guests and staff when using or close to equipment such as mowers, weed-eaters, blowers, and sprayers; basic knowledge of gardening techniques and terminology. Must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record! Salary $9.50 per hour. Four positionsare available May 1–August 31 (flexiblestartand end dates).
