DESCRIPTION:


The Montgomery County Department of Parks is seeking a Horticulturist I for the Brookside Gardens location. The Gardens welcome over 400,000 visitors annually to its gardens, programs and events.  To learn more about Brookside Gardens, visit our website at www.brooksidegardens.org.

This position will plan and manage a work program that includes maintenance and design of a prominent area of complex horticultural displays and landscapes at Brookside Gardens, the Montgomery County Department of Parks' premier horticultural showplace.

The selected candidate will:

  • Design and install highly specialized seasonal plant displays for exhibit and education.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of horticultural projects.
  • Professionally maintain and enhance unique and diverse plantings through weed and pest control, specialty pruning, landscape installation, tree aftercare, soil amendment and testing, mulching and snow removal.
  • Plans, instructs, and supervises work of staff and volunteers; may monitor work of contractors.
  • Specifies/orders plants by established deadlines for own designs; recommends plants for landscape and collection enhancements throughout gardens. 
  • Researches, estimates, and recommends materials, equipment, supplies and other resources needed.
  • Maintains records, files and inventory pertinent to area of responsibility.
  • Operates a range of landscape equipment and vehicles.
  • Prepares and presents interpretive and educational programs to visitors and staff.  Interacts with visitors daily.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field; and

2. One year of professional experience in horticulture or closely related field; or

3. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

4. Valid driver’s license.

5. A Maryland State Pesticide Applicator’s License required within six months of employment.

 

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Preferred qualifications:  Considerable knowledge in plant identification and care, landscape maintenance and design; supervisory ability; good communications skills; ability to deal effectively and courteously with visitors. Skill in using large equipment and hand tools; skill in operation of a personal computer and software. 

Working conditions include work in the field and office, considerable pressure to meet deadlines, occasional weekends and evenings, and work in extreme weather conditions.
