Long considered one of the region’s most valued assets, the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) is a nonprofit organization that operates the Detroit Zoo and the Belle Isle Nature Zoo (BINZ).  For more than 80 years the DZS has served the greater Detroit region in both well-known and quiet ways. Located on 125 acres, the Society’s commitment to the animals in its care, wildlife conservation, humane ethics, the environment, the southeast Michigan community, its members and visitors is part of a strong tradition.

Reporting to the Executive Director/CEO, the Chief Program Officer (CPO) is responsible for leadership, strategy development, management and oversight of the Education Division.  The Chief Program Officer strategizes, plans and prioritizes the division’s activities while working with other members of the Executive Leadership Team to ensure that educational activities align with, support and enhance the Society’s mission and goals. 

The ideal candidate will possess at least 10 years leadership experience in education program development and execution with a minimum of 5 years experience in a management, administrative and supervisory role.  This person must have an advanced understanding of educational processes, instructional methods, teaching experience (formal and informal) and learning models to draw upon. We seek someone who has skills to define and implement best practices in program presentation, ideally in a setting similar to the Zoo.  It is highly preferable the successful finalist exhibits a progressively advanced career in a science related field, including environmental science.

A master’s degree in education, instructional design or equivalent is highly desirable although a master’s degree in a related field and with proven experience as stated above is acceptable.  A public programs career arc in cultural facilities or public attractions such as zoological parks, arboreta, natural history museums, botanic gardens, science centers, children’s museums or similar institutions would be ideal.
